A monster Calls Analysis

In class we read a gripping novel called A Monster Calls and then we watched the movie (the book’s still better!). Here is my analysis.

 Missing characters

In the movie there were some missing characters who were really important in the whole context of the book. They were: Lilly, a girl who was actually friends with Connor and passed him a note in class saying “I see you”, Miss Kwan, who is Connor’s teacher that supports him in class and the nightmare monster who I think represents cancer (what his mum had) because it tries to take Connor’s mum out of Connor’s hands.

12:07

In the book, it is not explained why the Monster always comes at 12:07 but in the movie it shows you that it’s at 12:07 when Connor’s mum dies and the Monster goes away. 12:07 is the most important time in the book.

Main theme

The main theme of A Monster Calls is to always tell the truth even if you are scared or don’t want to tell anyone. The Monster’s message is “ if you tell the truth you can be cured”.

Have you ever not wanted to conceal the truth?

Fox adaptations

This cunning member of the canine family is more than just your local pest but has a way to survive and thrive without humans as well.

Foxes are usually found in grasslands with deer, rabbits and chickens. They have long, thick, curly fur on their belly to protect themselves from some animals bigger than them.

Some features are: fur the colour of their surroundings, their padded paws help them sneak up on prey, their big, pointy ears help them hear prey and their noses help them smell out animal burrows.

They eat mostly chickens, sunflower seeds, deer, rabbit, mice, rats and scraps from dead animals killed by other animals.

The fox will use it’s keen sense of smell to sniff out burrows left behind by other animals to make a home and have it’s cubs in spring.

Have you seen a fox before?

The year 5 production

G’day folks and welcome to this coverage of the year 5 production! The readers are hushed and exited full of anticipation!

This term we all acted in H.O.T.B.O.T.W (Hanging onto the bottom of the world). We all got scripts and characters to play. I was the Prospector who finds gold. He represents Edward Hargreaves who first discovered gold.

H.O.T.B.O.T.W is about Australia becoming a nation and how it happened an example in our play is that W.A was late for the wedding (federation) and in real life W.A federated last because they wanted to keep their land for themselves.

We had a lot of props. There was gold, guns made of toilet rolls, a Chinese dragon, cricket gear, microphones, a walkie-talkie, a flag, a tricycle, an inflatable crown, miners rights on string, tea trolleys, tea cups, a piece of paper, sandwiches, sunglasses, hats, drinks, camp chairs, apples, a crate, a box, binoculars, fake beards, fake sideburns, signposts, brooms, cups, sand, a commentary box, headpieces, veils, flowers, aprons and a lot more.

Overall this was a great, fun experience and I would say it was a really cool and funny play.

Would you do a production?
